When asked what the attributes of a Local are people usually list various pieces, but the one common thread is the membership. The local thrives on wide membership involvement and their pride in the union. It goes without saying that the strength of a union is in direct proportion to the involvement and mutual support of it membership. The essence of unionism is members helping members. To us, a member is the most important person in the Local. A member is not dependant on us; we are dependant on them. A member is the purpose of our work, not an inconvenience. We are not doing them a favour by serving them; they are doing us a favour by giving us the opportunity to do so. A member is not an outsider to the running of our local; they are part of it. A member is not someone to argue with or match wits with. Winning the argument is never worth the loss of a member. A member is a person who brings us their needs and wants. It is our job to handle them well; for them, ourselves and most of all for the Local. And of course, a member is part of our family. One who we will fight for and protect until the bitter end.
